That would work just fine. I can’t tell you what the system requirements are but I know that you’ll be fine as long as you have enough space to do the post processing of your capture after it completes.

So I’m about to start putting together a full system for my home along these lines.

Basically what I’m thinking is to use the Acer as a frontend device to get all the content I want and display it in 1080p on my TV.

Now, do you think the best solution for the backend would be to use an old windows box I have lying around and convert to Linux with a TV tuner card to catch over the air HD stuff? What are the power/system reqs for something like that. The box I have is pretty old and not all that great.

I lost most of my old post data during a data center failure with my old hosting service (yay for no backups). In a nutshell I was praising ATVFlash for the service. It worked very well for my AppleTV, however, there are much better solutions out there now. I’d go with this solution over ATVFlash since it’s free and open source. Let me know if you have any problems. I’ve been running a modded ATV for at least 9 months now without issue. Boxee is a bit slow on the AppleTV but XBMC works very well. I’m contemplating on buying a Popcorn Hour A110, but I’ll probably hold out for a NVidia ION based HTPC.

Hello,

I’d like to thank you for your blog about your friend, Tim. Made me think of some old WoW friends with whom I’d spent so much time and lost touch. I have a question for you, unrelated to that topic, but nevertheless brought me to your blog in the first place.

You had written something about ATVFlash which is still linked on google (via digg.com), but is missing here. I’m curious as to what you’d said about that story. Any chance on reposting it?

re: Using the Finder instead of the Dock to browse your file system to locate/open an app, doc (“file”).

Here’s a suggestion I use. Drag an alias of your Applications folder (erm, sorry, directory) into your Dock. Then all you need do is click once on your Dock icon (of your Applications folder, Hard Drive name (erm, letter?) or w/e and cruise along until you find your desired file.

Hint: avoiding mouse/trackpad button clicks is one of my goals on most occasions, so I find setting one’s Finder preferences to use columns as a default view allows for only one real click on your Dock’s Applications (or w/e) icon then you can drive along as you see fit in your file system w/ the arrow keys.

Congrats on your MBP. The keyboard takes some time to master. Use iTerm instead of Terminal.app. Once you start thinking in OSX you’ll really start to really enjoy it.

The problem with recent Windows converts is that they still natively think (“How would I do this in Windows?”) …

You’ll want to get your music is in iTunes, photos in iPhoto or Lightroom, learn how to use Spotlight for searching and Time Machine for backups, etc .
